A family reviewing home care options and paperwork together at home

If you’ve started looking into home care for a parent, you’ve probably already run into the question that stops most families in their tracks: how on earth do we pay for this?

It’s a fair worry. The good news is there are usually more options than people expect, and you don’t have to figure them out alone. Here’s how it tends to shake out for families here in North Texas.

Texas Medicaid

If your loved one qualifies for Medicaid, a good portion of in-home care may be covered. For older adults and people with disabilities, the program that usually matters is STAR+PLUS, which is Texas Medicaid’s managed care plan for long-term services and supports. It can cover help with daily activities like bathing, dressing, and meals, and in some cases skilled nursing at home.

Qualifying comes down to both income and level of need. The paperwork can feel like a lot, and that’s normal. When you call us, we can walk you through what’s involved and point you toward the right place to apply.

Private pay

Plenty of families simply pay out of pocket, either because they don’t qualify for Medicaid or because they want care to start right away while an application is pending. Private pay gives you the most flexibility. You decide how many hours, which days, and what kind of help you want, and you can change it as needs change.

A mix of both

It’s common to combine the two. A family might use Medicaid-covered hours during the week and add a few private-pay hours on weekends, or bridge the gap with private pay while a STAR+PLUS application works its way through the system.

Every situation is a little different, which is exactly why we offer a free assessment before anything gets decided. We’ll talk through what your loved one needs, what they qualify for, and what it would realistically cost. No pressure, no commitment.
